Recently, I had a discussion with a person about my work; and in the words of this person, my work is original. And instead of how it's normal in almost all artists, in which the respective works are about some specific subject, I do the opposite, I work on myself, and on all the things that revolve in my personal universe.
There was another thing that this person told me, and it was very important for me: "Fábio your work is one! You can give several names to the different chapters, but you can mix all these chapters in a great story, and it will be you there, your work! Your work is you!”
That leads me to this specific chapter of my story:
After a past, with an early childhood, strange relationships, and issues like alcohol and drugs always present, there was a drastic and somehow surprisingly change, the embrace of a tremendously normal life, with some common goals like to build a family with someone.
Eight years have passed, a son arrived, but the big plan went wrong.
This project takes shape, from that very moment, there has been a great change, too many changes.
At the end of this line, there was a return to the starting point, the abandonment of a life built by two persons, and the helplessness of being without a house, without work, and mostly, far from a small child; at the same time that all these facts needed to be digested and overcomed, a new reality was forced into action. The return to the childhood home, to the old places, to many memories set aside.
This work focuses on these new aspects, the exploration of the new / old space, in the feelings of abandonment, nostalgia, solitude, and in numerous questions that came from this chaos:
Will the new life be the same as the old one set aside so many years ago?
Will love reappear?
What is the best way to move forward? Is it a constructive or destructive path?
Some of these questions still remain unanswered, the future has not yet arrived, the project continues.

Recentemente, ho avuto una discussione con una persona relativamente il mio lavoro e nelle parole di questi il mio lavoro è originale, peculiare. E invece di quanto è normale per quasi tutti gli artisti, i cui rispettivi lavori sono su soggetti specifici, io faccio il contrario, lavoro su me stesso e tutto ruota intorno al mio universo personale.
C’è un’altra cosa che quella persona mi ha detto e ciò è veramente importante per me: “Fabio il tuo lavoro è una unità! Puoi attribuire diversi nomi a differenti capitoli ma puoi altresì mescolare il tutto in una più vasta storia, e sarai il tuo lavoro. Il tuo lavoro sei te stesso!"
Questo mi conduce a questo particolare capitolo della mia storia:
Dopo un passato, con una infanzia breve, strane relazioni e problemi come l’alcol e le droghe sempre presenti, ci fu un drastico e in qualche modo sorprendente cambiamento, in cui ci si confronta con una tremendamente normale vita, con alcuni comuni obiettivi tipo creare una famiglia con qualcuno.
Otto anni sono passati, un figlio è arrivato ma il grande progetto è andato storto.
Questo progetto prende forma, da quel preciso momento, ci sono stati grandi cambiamenti, troppi cambiamenti.
Alla fine di questa linea c’era un ritorno al punto di partenza, l’abbandono della creazione di una vita tra due persone, l’impotenza di essere senza una casa, senza lavoro, e più di ogni altra cosa lontano da un piccolo bambino.; allo stesso tempo in cui tutti questi fatti necessitavano di essere digeriti e superati, una nuova realtà è stata forzata a prendere vita. Il ritorno alla casa della mia infanzia, i vecchi luoghi, troppe memorie messe da parte.
Questo lavoro si focalizza su questi nuovi aspetti, l’esplorazione dei nuovi/vecchi luoghi, con il sentimento di abbandono, nostalgia, solitudine e su numerose domande che provenivano da questo caos.
La nuova vita sarà la stessa della vecchia messa da parte così tanti anni fa?
L’amore riapparirà?
Qual’è il modo migliore per avanzare? E’ un percorso costruttivo o distruttivo?
Alcune di queste domande rimangono tuttora senza riposta, il futuro non si è ancora presentato, il progetto continua.

Nota del curatore
Appena ho visto le fotografie di Fábio Miguel Roque mi è stato subito evidente che esse mostravano lui stesso, i suoi tormenti. Nonostante non conoscessi ancora nulla della storia personale di questo giovane uomo sentivo tutta la sua sofferenza.
Una ricerca delle origini, di personali mondi e molteplici vite in una sola, ma nonostante il forte imprinting autobiografico essa è proiettata nell’Universo, da cui l’autore si attende delle risposte.
C’è un uomo, il suo corpo lacerato, segnato dall’essere in questo mondo, in questa vita che gli è data; e c’è un uomo che tende invece verso l’infinito, l’ignoto, cercando consolazione al senso di smarrimento, di quell‘attimo perduto per sempre che genera un disagio di cui tutta la sua opera è pervasa.
Segnali sparsi di una qualsivoglia appartenenza a un Cosmo ignoto laddove non più possibile quella invece ad una contingenza ben delimitata nei confini della propria personalità, del tessuto la cui trama sembra già tutta scritta e perduta nell’ordito sfilacciato del passato.
Quello di Fábio è uno stato che rimane sfuggevole e sognante ma tuttavia mai senza speranza. I profondi neri e gli accecanti bianchi conducono da qualche parte che Fabio non può ancora comprendere ma allo stesso tempo riconosce come una possibilità reale.
Sono immagini che stridono tra il rude coraggio della carne e il tenero desiderio di lasciarsi cullare in un oblio senza sostanza, escluso dalla pressione del tempo che scorre.

The moment I saw the pictures of Fábio Miguel Roque it was evident to me they were about him, about his struggles. Despite knowing nothing yet of the personal story of this young man, I could definitely feel his pain.
A research for origins, for personal worlds and for multiple lives in one, but at the same time and beside the strong autobiographical imprinting it is projected to the Universe, from which the author expects to receive answers.
There is a man, with his torn body, scarred by his existence in this world, in this life he was given; and there is a man aiming at the infinite, at the unknown, seeking for consolation against a sense of loss, of the forever gone moment that generates a distress permeating all his opera.
Scattered signs of a belonging to an unknown Cosmos where it is not possible anymore to belong to a contingency well-defined within the boundaries of one's own personality, within the fabric with an apparently already filled weft lost in the frayed warp of the past.
However elusive and dreaming, Fábio's status is never hopeless. The deep blacks and the blinding whites lead somewhere Fabio cannot yet understand, though he does recognize a real possibility.
Images screech between the rough courage of the flesh and the sweet desire to be lulled in an immaterial oblivion, excluded from the pressure of time flow. Each image leaves the observer with many questions and sone answers.

Biography
Fábio Miguel Roque (b. 1985) photographer, publisher and curator. Born in Lisbon and based in Sintra, Portugal. On his work we can notice a clear duality between documentary photography and also intimate and personal projects. He makes the big part on his studies on I.P.F. (Portuguese Institute of Photography) between 2004 and 2007, and also several workshops in other portuguese institutions, like History of Contemporary Photography in Ar.Co. He worked as a photojournalist at the beginning of his career, but for several reasons, he decided to focus on different subjects. In the last years he made several solo and collective exhibitions both in Portugal and abroad, in places like US, Spain, Bulgaria, Poland and Germany. He was also shortlisted for some festival and awards, his projects are also in several publications from zines to books, between then "Hometown", "South", "I found fireflies in my dream, talking to a strange, drunk and dead man!", "Awaken", “Origin” and “Silence”. In 2014 he starts the publishing house "The Unknown Books", and since then he published more then 50 zines and books; co-director of Preto Magazine, a magazine dedicated to strong black and white photogrpahy, that comes to life after the end of Preto Collective. He is also member of Latent Image Collective, since 2014 and he is available for assignments, lectures and workshops, both in Portugal and abroad.

Nato a Lisbona e stanziato a Sintra, Portogallo. Nel suo lavoro possiamo notare una chiara dualità tra fotografia documentaristica e pure intimistici e personali progetti. La sua formazione proviene in gran parte dagli studi presso l'Istituto Portoghese di Fotografia tra il 2004 e il 2007 e anche da diversi workshops in altri istituti portoghesei, come Storia della fotografia contemporanea ad Ar.Co. All'inizio della sua carriera, egli ha lavorato come fotogiornalista ma, per diverse ragioni, ha deciso di focalizzarsi su soggetti differenti. Negli ultimi anni ha esposto in diverse mostre personali e collettive sia in Portogallo che all'estero, come negli Stati Uniti, Spagna, Bulgaria, Polonia e Germania. E' stato anche selezionato per alcuni festival e premi e i suoi progetti sono in diverse pubblicazioni da zine a libri, tra i quali "Hometown", "South", "I found fireflies in my dream, talking to a
strange, drunk and dead man!", "Awaken", “Origin” e “Silence”. Nel 2014 ha avviato la editrice "The Unknown Books", e da allora ha pubblicato oltre 50 zine e libri; è co.direttore di Preto Magazine, una rivista dedicata alla fotografia duramente bianco e nero che nasce dopo la fine del Collettivo Preto. Dal 2014 egli è membro del Collettivo Latent Image ed è disponibile per incarichi, letture e workshops sia in Portogallo che all'estero.
